Despite winning the Western & Southern Open seven times, Roger has withdrawn from the 2017 tournament.
"I am very sorry to pull out of the Western & Southern Open as I always enjoy playing here," he said. "Cincinnati has some of the best fans in the world and I am sorry I will miss them. Unfortunately, I tweaked my back in Montreal and I need to rest this week."
A lucky loser will replace him in the draw and have the benefit of a first round bye.
Roger's withdrawal assures Rafael Nadal will return to No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings when the new rankings are released on Monday, Aug. 21.
August 13, 2017 -- Montreal, Canada
In the Finals of the Rogers Cup today, Roger faced the rambunctious, German ATP #NextGen 20 year old, Alexander Zverev. The 6'6 youngster started string, serving big and hitting through the Swiss veteran on the fast, hard court.
There looked to be some hope for Roger in the beginning of the second set to push it to three as he stepped up his play and began dictating against Zverev who also started to make more mistakes. However, Roger noticeably was not 100% and seemed to be lacking explosive movements on his shots. Zverev fought on and continued to take it to the Swiss star eventually winning 6-3, 6-4.
Up next for Roger is Cincinnati.
August 12, 2017 -- Montreal, Canada
In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Roger took the court against Robin Hasse today in the semifinals of the Rogers Cup.
Making quick work of the first set, Hasse played closer in the second, pushing it to a tiebreaker where Roger dominated to win the match 6-3, 7-6(5).
"I'm happy -- most happy that I'm actually really healthy going into the finals," he said. "I haven't wasted too much energy. I've been able to keep points short. I've been really clean at net. I think my concentration and just my playing has gone up a notch. I'm just playing better." Roger will face ATP Next Gen star, Alexander Zverev, tomorrow in the finals.
August 11, 2017 -- Montreal, Canada
Making some adjustments after yesterday's tough match, Roger took to the court in an aggressive style today against Roberto Bautista Agut.
He charged the net often winning 19 of 20 points up there.
Pleased with his play, Roger felt in control and like he was figuring out how to play on the Montreal courts better during todays Quarterfinal. He won 6-4, 6-4 earning himself a spot in the semifinals tomorrow against Robin Haase.
While the number one spot on the ATP remains to be up for grab, Roger reiterated that he will remain focused on playing his best tennis and not worry about the number 1 ranking.
August 10, 2017 -- Montreal, Canada
In a challenging two hour match, Roger came away with his 17th career win over ATP veteran, David Ferrer.
The Spaniard challenged Roger and looked to be in top form after winning his 27th ATP title two weeks ago in Bastad. Pushing the match to three sets, the Swiss star cleaned up his game in the 3rd set and was executing his shots to close out the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
He will play Bautista Agut in the next round.
