June 25, 2017 -- Halle, Germany
Roger finished a successful week at the Gerry Weber Open today with his near flawless play. He faced the always tough number 12 ranked player on the ATP, Alexander Zverev. Roger started strong and dominated the final with his beautiful shot selection. He needed less than an hour to win his 16th grass court title, 6-1, 6-3. This is Roger's 9th title in Halle.
“It's great to get off to a good start in the finals and then remind yourself that you've been playing good tennis all week. You start swinging freely, things start clicking, you realize your opponent is under pressure and you keep pressuring him,” he said. “I'm like on 'Cloud Nine' right now after the ninth win here in Halle. It's a wonderful feeling to win here again because I'm not sure if I'll ever get a chance to win this again so it's important to enjoy this one.”
With this win, Roger joins Nadal as one of the only two men in the Open Era who have won a tournament more than eight times. He also improves to 4-0 in title matches in 2017 and now has 92 career titles.
Next up for the Swiss Maestro will be Wimbledon where he will be contending for his 8th title at the All England Club.
